Spring break traditionally offers a chance for both students and staff to rejuvenate and gear up for the final stretch of the academic year. This year, however, was extra special for a select group of students as Passaic High School’s Globetrotters Club embarked on their inaugural overseas trip to Italy! Departing on the first day of spring break from JFK International Airport, their Italian odyssey began with a layover in Frankfurt, Germany, before touching down in Milan.
Their itinerary spanned the length and breadth of Italy, starting with a stop in Verona for a leisurely lunch and some sightseeing. Easter Sunday was celebrated in the enchanting city of Venice, where the students marveled at a glass-blowing demonstration and explored the unique charms of the floating city. Despite encountering some rain, they embarked on a memorable gondola ride after the skies cleared.
Their journey continued through the picturesque landscapes of Tuscany, with highlights including a visit to Florence, where they beheld the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa and delved into the art of leather making. A pilgrimage to the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi provided insights into the saint’s life before the group ventured to Pompeii to witness the haunting ruins and the looming presence of Mt. Vesuvius.
The final leg of their adventure brought them to the historic streets of Rome, where they explored renowned landmarks such as Vatican City, the Colosseum, and the Trevi Fountain. Immersed in the rich tapestry of Italian culture, the students dined on local delicacies, picked up snippets of the language, and forged lasting memories.
Upon their return, the travelers reflected on their transformative experiences, with many expressing a newfound perspective on life and a desire to explore the world further. As they eagerly anticipate their next excursion to England and Scotland in 2025, the Passaic Globetrotters are poised to continue their journey of discovery, fueled by curiosity and a thirst for adventure.
Upon their return, the travelers reflected on their transformative experiences. “I felt like a different person,” remarked one student, while another expressed feeling inspired. “I view life differently now,” added another, echoing the sentiments of their peers who had been bitten by the travel bug and couldn’t wait to explore abroad again.
When asked for advice for future Globetrotters, two students shared their insights. “Be very excited and have a positive mindset,” urged one. “You spent a lot of money for a reason! Everything in the trip will all be worth it! You get to try their dishes, visit beautiful places, see nice views, have lots of fun, and make new friends!! Be prepared and ready for an adventure.”
“Enjoy your experience there,” advised another student. “You’ll miss it when you get home, and it’ll be worth your time. Stick with your group, don’t try to go alone since it will cause problems and be time-consuming for others. Try to buy something if it catches your eye; you probably won’t see it ever again.”
Special thanks are extended to the dedicated advisors, Mrs. Soto and Ms. Cabassa, whose efforts made this trip possible. Gratitude is also extended to Superintendent Dr. Montanez-Diodonet, the Board of Education, and the parents for their unwavering support. With each expedition, the Passaic Globetrotters exemplify the transformative power of travel and the boundless opportunities it presents for growth and exploration.
