Passaic High School Juniors Dive into Civic Engagement: Youth in Government Day Recap

Passaic High School (PHS) juniors recently embarked on a unique educational journey as they participated in Youth in Government Day. Collaborating with the Passaic Academy for Science and Engineering (PASE) and Passaic Regional Educational Programs (PREP), these students immersed themselves in the inner workings of local governance, shadowing key officials across Passaic City Hall and the Board of Education Central Office.

During this immersive experience, students had the invaluable opportunity to shadow prominent figures such as Mayor Lora, Superintendent Dr. Montañez-Diodonet, Business Administrators, the Fire Chief, the Police Chief, City Council Members, Board of Education Members, and more. This hands-on approach provided an up-close look at the daily responsibilities and decision-making processes of these influential leaders, offering a glimpse into the complexities of civic leadership.

The significance of Youth in Government Day extends beyond mere observation; it serves as a pivotal moment in the educational journey of these juniors, offering real-world insights that complement classroom learning. By engaging directly with local officials and witnessing governance in action, students gain a deeper understanding of civic responsibility and the mechanisms driving community development.

Through this immersive experience, students not only broaden their knowledge of local governance but also cultivate essential skills such as critical thinking, communication, and leadership. As they navigate the corridors of City Hall and engage in meaningful dialogue with elected officials, these young participants are empowered to become informed and active citizens, poised to make meaningful contributions to their community.

Youth in Government Day represents more than just a field trip—it’s a catalyst for civic engagement, inspiring the next generation of leaders to embrace their role in shaping the future of Passaic. As these students return to their classrooms with newfound insights and inspiration, they carry with them the seeds of positive change, ready to sow them in the fertile soil of their community.
