PHS TV & Film students are embracing the Halloween spirit with an exciting new project: a short film adaptation titled “The Hitchhiker.” This creative endeavor is part of their ongoing curriculum, where students explore the full production pipeline—from script to screen.
Based on an excerpt from a short story, students were tasked with adapting the material into a screenplay, followed by drawing storyboards and crafting a detailed shot list. The process has encouraged collaboration, critical thinking, and hands-on experience with industry-standard techniques.
One of the standout elements of the production is the use of green screen technology. Featured in the behind-the-scenes photos is a recreation of the film’s opening car scene, where students are experimenting with keying out backgrounds and layering in atmospheric visuals to simulate a realistic driving sequence. This approach allows them to create the illusion of being in a scene without leaving the classroom.
In addition to visual effects, students have been conducting research on sound design—selecting sound effects and ambient audio that will enhance the eerie tone of the film. These elements are crucial in building suspense and immersing the audience in the story.
The final products will be showcased on the PHS Productions YouTube Channel, where the school community and beyond can witness the creativity and technical skill of these budding filmmakers.
