Did you know that more than 70,000 Passaic County residents experience food insecurity each year?
To help meet this need, Passaic High School DECA, Bible Club, and Student Council partner each month with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey to operate a local food pantry for families in our community. Students volunteer their time to sort, pack, and distribute groceries to more than 400 individuals every month. Hunger ends when everyday heroes step up. Changing lives one pantry visit at a time.
What makes this initiative remarkable isn’t just the number of people served—it’s how completely student-driven it is. Students design creative ways to promote the food pantry across the school and throughout the community, using posters, morning announcements, social media, and word-of-mouth campaigns to make sure families know they are welcome. They also manage their own growing network of volunteers, organizing schedules, assigning roles, and ensuring distribution events run smoothly and efficiently.
Through this work, students are learning lessons that go far beyond the pantry doors. Volunteerism strengthens the bonds within our school and city, reminding us that community is built through shared responsibility and kindness. Students develop leadership skills, problem-solving abilities, communication strategies, and a powerful understanding of civic engagement—skills that will benefit them long after graduation.
The rewards for their service are significant. In addition to the pride that comes from helping others, many students earn recognition and even scholarship opportunities for their commitment to addressing hunger in Passaic. Their work proves that real change does not require a title, a paycheck, or a lifetime of experience—just the courage to step up and serve.
These young leaders are not just stocking shelves and handing out bags of food. They are shaping a stronger, more compassionate future for Passaic, one pantry visit at a time.
