The Passaic High School community is mourning the loss of one of its most influential educators and leaders, Carlist Athel Creech, who passed away on October 14, 2025, at the age of 79.
Mr. Creech dedicated more than 40 years to the Passaic Public Schools, beginning his career in 1969 as a music teacher. He inspired generations of students through his work with concert, marching, and jazz bands. In 1974, he transitioned into administration and became principal of Passaic High School. Known for his “firm but fair” leadership style, Mr. Creech was deeply committed to student success and equity.
His influence extended far beyond the school walls. Mr. Creech worked for 15 years at the Passaic Boys & Girls Club and earned his master’s degree from Montclair State University. His dedication to education and community service earned him numerous accolades, including honors from the NAACP, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, and the Passaic County Board of Chosen Freeholders.
Born in South Carolina, Mr. Creech attended Jarvis Christian College in Texas on a full music scholarship and played professionally in an R&B band. He later settled in Passaic.
A Lasting Legacy
Mr. Creech’s legacy continues through the Unity Luncheon, an annual event he founded at Passaic High School. The luncheon celebrates diversity and funds a scholarship for a graduating senior, typically a member of the African American Culture Club. It features cultural performances, community engagement, and support for local businesses—embodying the values Mr. Creech championed throughout his life.
In addition, the Passaic Optimist Club, with the blessing of the Creech family, has established the Carl and Susie Creech Memorial Scholarship in honor of two remarkable individuals who dedicated their lives to education and community service. Mr. Creech, a past President and proud member of the club for over 40 years, was not only an educator and Principal, but also a mentor who believed every student deserved the opportunity to succeed. This scholarship continues his legacy of optimism, leadership, and love for the youth of Passaic.
