Passaic High School students recently stepped beyond their classrooms and into a college campus during an enriching field trip to William Paterson University (WPU). The visit provided students with a firsthand look at college life, academic opportunities, and career pathways, helping them envision themselves as future college students.
From the moment they arrived on campus, students were welcomed into the vibrant environment of William Paterson University. Walking through the tree-lined pathways and modern academic buildings, students experienced the scale and energy of a university setting. Campus banners reading “Will. Power.” lined the walkways, reinforcing the message of motivation and possibility that framed the day.
A Warm Welcome and Campus Orientation
The trip began with an organized welcome session where university staff guided students through an overview of campus life. Inside a large presentation space, students learned about academic programs, student resources, and extracurricular opportunities offered at WPU. The session introduced topics such as admissions, financial aid, student support services, and campus involvement, giving students a clearer understanding of what the college experience entails.
Students were attentive as presenters explained how high school preparation connects directly to college success. The session emphasized that college is achievable and accessible with the right planning, effort, and support.
Hands-On Learning in Media and Broadcasting Studios
One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity for students to explore William Paterson University’s media and broadcasting facilities. In small groups, students toured professional radio studios and production spaces, where they saw industry-level equipment in action.
Students observed live studio setups featuring microphones, sound boards, headphones, and broadcasting software. They learned how college students produce radio shows, podcasts, and other media content as part of their coursework. Some Passaic High School students even had the chance to sit at the studio table, review scripts, and listen as faculty and student broadcasters explained how shows are planned, recorded, and aired.
This hands-on experience allowed students to connect classroom learning to real-world applications in communications, journalism, and media arts.
Exploring Academic and Career Pathways
Throughout the visit, students engaged with university staff and learned about various academic majors and career paths available at WPU. Conversations focused on how interests developed in high school can evolve into college majors and professional careers.
Students asked thoughtful questions about campus life, class expectations, and student support systems. These discussions helped demystify college life and encouraged students to think critically about their postsecondary goals.
Building Confidence and Future Goals
Beyond academics, the trip helped students build confidence and familiarity with a college environment. Taking group photos on campus, walking between buildings, and participating in structured activities gave students a strong sense of belonging in a university setting.
For many students, this visit was their first time on a college campus. Experiencing the atmosphere firsthand made college feel more real, attainable, and motivating.
